My Maternal Grandparents In Berlin

My maternal grandparents Wilhelm and Anna Schumacher, lived in Berlin, in the district Spandau, on the street Marschallstraße 10. My mother Ursula was born there in 1925. My grandfather Friedrich Wilhelm Schumacher was born on October 3, 1886, in the village Carow, county Jerichow II, in the province Sachsen-Anhalt, close to the city Genthin. He died of cancer on November 3, 1944 in Spandau, he was only 58 years old. His profession was carpenter. In his free time, he built radios which was a new technology in those days.

My grandmother Anna Martha Luise Emma Schumacher was born on July 21, 1886 in the village Arbshagen, county Franzburg, in the province of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, close to the city Stralsund. Her maiden name was Gellin. She died of cancer in Bremen on May 20, 1965, she was 78 years old. During her marriage she was a housewife.

While traveling as a craft bursche (carpenter,) my grandfather Wilhelm met my grandmother Anna in the city Greifswald, in the province of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. During this time, Anna worked as a maid in an upper household. Before their wedding, Wilhelm and Anna lived together in the province Brandenburg, where their son Werner was born in 1912. My grandparents married on August 3, 1914, in the city Stralsund in the province of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, shortly before World War I began.

Later, they moved to Berlin. Wilhelm and Anna lived with their son Werner, in the district Spandau, on the Street Weißenburger Straße. On this street, Margot was born in 1915. During the inflation, Wilhelm lost his job because of the global economic crisis in 1929. There was mass unemployment during that time. Later, he started working as carpenter at the company Siemens.

Anna`s father was the laborer, Adolph Carl Theodor Gellin, born on November 27, 1852 in the village Giesendorf, county Vorpommern-Rügen, in the province of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. His wife Johanne Marie Henriette Grothe, was born on January 29, 1853, in the village Martensdorf, county Vorpommern-Rügen, in the province of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. They were married on October 31, 1885, in the local community Zipke, county Nordvorpommern, in the province of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Wilhelm`s father was the farm servant, Carl Friedrich Schumacher, born June 25, 1855, in the town Ziesar, district Bücknitz, county Potsdam-Mittelmark, in the province of Brandenburg. His wife Wilhelmine Friederike Altenkirsch, was born on June 13, 1856, in the village Karow, county Jerichow II, in the province of Sachsen-Anhalt. They were married on December 1, 1878 in the village Karow.
